Homelessness has many causes. The leading reason is unaffordable housing. In 2012, roughly one in four renters in the US are classified as experiencing “extremely low income”. Household having extremely low income are those with income at or below 30 percent of the median household income in the city or rural area. Fleeing domestic violence is another major cause. Mental illness and addiction not being taken care of also contribute to a significant number of homelessness. Trauma, court ruling, disability, sudden crippling sickness, divorce, or death of a partner or parent often lead to losing one’s home.
